My own personal discovery that Slavery still existed came towards the end of my first semester senior year, just over a year ago actually. The last movie my sociology class watched together was Human Trafficking and it made a definite impact. Granted, it focuses on the sex trade industry, not exactly on the end slavery issue; that didn't make the experience of watching it any less jarring for me. It bothered me for reason I wont explore at the moment, because frankly I'm not the point of this note. Either way, I looked further into the issue and what I found is the stark facts that back up every thing that movie portrayed and more.
The first organization that jumped out at me was The Not For Sale Campaign and they're still one of my favorite organizations, they're creative, and their site has tons of ideas for a normal person to help contribute to ending slavery. They provide an amount of raw information that doesn't apologize in it's reality. They don't shy away from telling you that there are over 27 million slaves in today's world, and one of the biggest markets for these slaves is right here in the USA. One of the sites made in an attempt to curb this is The Slavery Map; the idea is that people need to learn what to look for and report it.
But Not For Sale isn't just focused on the United States of America; they have several projects around the world focused on helping orphans and former slaves. Their vision is to “end slavery in our lifetime.” But they aren't alone in the fight.
The Freeze Project is another organization focused on raising awareness to the issue; it's not as involved as Not For Sale but it's still a viable option if you wanted to get involved. Plus I think it looks a bit fun, to be honest.

I switched to Audacity, which works so much easier than that thing I was using before. I like the fact that the final file doesn't have the same fuzzy quality to it that my last one did. I adore how much easier this was to make and I'm having too much fun to slow down. =3 The main problem is making time to actually sit down, but I think this is something I can definitely see myself making time for in the future.

I'll admit that a part of me was super skeptical. The political storm that surrounded the first black Disney princess almost gave me an ulcer; personally I don't care about the race of the main character or even minor ones for that matter. A good story is a good story always has been to me, the fact that Disney was being forced to be more than politically correct than they've ever been in the past made me smirk and twitch in equal measure. I didn't care if her name was Maddie or Tiana, if she was a waitress or a maid, or if her prince is Polynesian or White; all i wanted was something that would make me smile and not be completely insipid.
I did have hopes, I mean Ron Clements and John Musker are two of my favorites when it comes to animation directors, and Randy Newman did the music for Cats Don't Dance so a little part of me danced when i heard he was doing music for the new classic. So my biggest fear was to see those hopes crushed under another lack-luster Disney movie, I mean who actually wanted to see G Force?
So sitting in that dark theater, slightly lonely, and getting more and more hyped on Pibb through the previews I was slightly worried and excited. But as soon as I heard the first lovely notes of "Down in New Orleans" and saw the artwork I was sold. The movie lived up to my hopes, and transcended the political maelstrom that surrounded it. The plot isn't too complicated, it's a kids movie so duh, but it's lovely in it's simplicity.
Tiana's character is witty, intelligent, and almost too independent; Naveen's a pretty boy prince who doesn't know how to do anything but party and somehow they both remain lovable throughout. Along with a cast of animal characters from the Bayou the two attempt to figure out just how they can become human again. It's charming and sweet and just the thing I needed to cheer me up after a few weeks stuck with my parents. The music was lovely, the humor witty, and the animation, amazing; I give it five stars and anyone with kids should see it.
